LOST

Last night I watched LOST for the first time in years. As some of you may remember, when I watched the first season of LOST I immediately saw scenes right out my ATLANTIS series of books. I was considering pursuing legal options but learned it’s really hard to prove theft of intellectual property. However, a factor has recently come up that has me reconsidering that.

Anyway. I know the secret of LOST after watching the episode last night. They pretty much threw it out there last night, but I’m not sure many picked up on it. Think the Albert Brooks movie DEFENDING YOUR LIFE thrown into the setting of my ATLANTIS novel.

If you will notice, none of those people trust each other. And the emphasis on back-story is actually showing you how they lived. The people who die are ones who’ve changed, who’ve made amends. The rest continue their non-trusting, non-loving ways. The Others are the monitors, testing them. For those who haven’t read my ATLANTIS books or seen DEFENDING YOUR LIFE, they are all dead. They’re being tested in order to ‘move on’. The people on the plane who never made it to island moved on without having to go through the ‘trial’ of the island. It’s about love and fear.

There’s a part of me wondering if ABC changed course in the series after realizing the plagiarizing of ATLANTIS has been noticed. After all, what happened to the polar bear? Why is Amelia Earhart’s body on the island? Etc. Etc.

I’ve been trying to get a publisher interested in republishing the ATLANTIS books, especially in e-book format for download, using LOST as the promotion for it and haven’t gotten a response. One of the frustrating things about publishing is that it’s very rare to find publishers that think ouside the book or see unique possibilities. But I will continue trying.

I haven’t read your Atlantis books, but that sounds like a good idea. Pursue those publishers and get your stories back out there in e-book to let the world know those are your ideas, your words. Damn them!

I’m about to start Psychic Warrior. Love the cover.

Have not watched LOST, but my daughter is a total nut over it. She and her friends ‘text’ during commericals trying to figure out what’s going to happen next.

I hope things work out getting them back out there. I know I read some of them. Know I have some of them, but can’t find them anywhere which just pisses me off. I swear I’m missing like a closet full of books.

Interesting - never thought about tossing DEFENDING YOUR LIFE in with ATLANTIS, but from what I remember, makes sense. Wonder if my daughter would like the series, if I can find them. If I can’t I’ll be really torked.

And as Winston Churchill once said, Never Quit. Or something like that.

good luck Bob! we’re rooting for you!

and i’m doing my part. every time someone mentions (which i’ve never seen), i tell them about these books…

    JJ: close enough

hey rg, so where’s the line from?

    -OH

  4. Anonymous Says:

    ahem. mentions Lost.

  5. Jennifer Talty Says:

Blogger freaking hates me. If this doesn’t come through this time, then screw it, I’m done.

RG - From the last post - the line from the Mel Brooks movie? I’m thinking HIGH ANXIETY? That movie freaking cracked me up. Thought it was hysterical.

not that any of this has anything to do with the post.

But you know, ebooks are cool. I’m just saying.

  6. Anonymous Says:

Keeping it OT and trying not to tick off Bob for messing with his blog. Yes, e-books are very cool. *grin*

Okay Jen-T I owe you drinks in the bar at National. Unless of course you want a jar of vegemite.

I quit watching Lost because it dragged on and on and nothing happened, and I pretty much figured out the hell/pergatory bit from the beginning anyway.

Definitely think you should persue all options.

  8. me Says:

Um, Bob? Jenny says you have two books out now? And you haven’t mentioned anything? Is the new one The Citadel? I just looked it up on Amazon.

  9. BCB Says:

Ahem. You forgot you have two books out? Do you suppose maybe you could tell us what they are? And which name they’re published under? You know, in case one or two of us wanted to buy them? And read them? Maybe even recommend them to friends?

Geez, Bob. I know you’re a man of few words, but this is like pulling teeth from a chicken. Have you ever tried to get a chicken to hold still, while not letting it see the pliers? Huh. Didn’t think so. You’d be more forthcoming if you had.

Have you and Jenny actually written the workshop lesson on Marketing/Bookselling yet? Because I think you’re going to need a special disclaimer on that one: “Do as we say, not as we do.”

  10. Mary Says:

    chicken? teeth? um… BCB?

Bob, I’m loving Psychic Warrior. You have a twisted mind but … oh yeah … we knew that already. Anyway got as far as the “eyes thing” and thought I’d have to put it down so I could read something sweeter or I’d have nightmares. But I couldn’t put it down and I was glad about that because then it raised tons of questions and I was hooked. I’m enjoying all of the psychic stuff and the physics and also the medical aspects. Also love how you’ve written Dalton and his wife, Marie and shown their devotion over thirty years. You ol’ softie you, showing your tender side. *grin*.

  12. BCB Says:

So. . . THE CITADEL, by some guy named Robert Doherty, came out last month.

Anything else we should know, Bob? Like maybe that the hardcover of LOST GIRLS, also by that Doherty guy and due out in August, is already available for pre-order at Amazon? You have any preference about whether we order it now or wait until the release date? You want us to maybe remind you about it in, oh, say, mid-July?

    Sheesh.

Yes, Mary, chicken teeth. Glad to see someone else appreciates the enormity, dare I say the impossibility, of the task of extracting information here.

You notice he won’t tell us about the Jeep either. Or the boat.

    Probably he thinks we’re psychic.

[And yes, I am completely ignoring your post about LOST being a blatant rip-off of ATLANTIS. I believe I expressed enough indignation about that appalling lack of integrity way back last fall when you first mentioned it. Do not even get me started again.]

  13. McB Says:

And then there’s the paper back issue of that book he wrote co-authored. You know, written in partnership with a woman by the name of …. oh dang, don’t you just hate when something is right on the tip of your tongue?

DON’T LOOK DOWN is out in paperback at a bookstore near you.

  14. BCB Says:

In the interests of not getting any more email telling me what an idiot I am, let me just say that OF COURSE I am going to wait until August to buy LOST GIRLS and that OF COURSE I will buy it at the bookstore. Certainly didn’t mean to suggest otherwise.

It is sort of fun, though, to go over to “that other place” to look at the book cover and read the blurb about it. You know, since someone won’t share over here.

You could self publish or go with a POD publisher. [shrugs]

http://www.lulu.com/ does both POD & eBooks. Their POD’s have shown up at several online bookstores of late too. Just do a search for Lulu at Amazon.com & Books A Million.com, to name a few I’ve found them at recently.

Bob, I’d buy your books in eBook form. As Louis said, the eForm is handy even if you have your own PB.

THE CITADEL, LOST GIRLS, and DLD in paperbook. Right, got the list, will purchase ASAP. Added LOST GIRLS to my Summer Watch List.

    Thanks BCB & MCB.

What is up with blogger and all the Anonymous. I can only get in that way.

    Marcia in OK

  17. Anonymous Says:

wait. to go back to the post, which i was jus rereading, was there really a polar bear on Lost? because didn’t that show take place in the tropics?

    isn’t that annoying Marcia?

hmmm, so you have a book out. more than one, even. really, the way you keep silent on that, great marketing tool. i mean, to let readers know about a book is just…well, foolish is too kind. would you like us to go around hiding them bob? because really, selling books is just, well, ugh. i understand. really. keep silent a little longer.

    -OH

  18. Jennifer Talty Says:

I’ve got no problem signing on with my name - imagine me as annoymous - nah - couldn’t happen.

OH - If you don’t have The Citadel - get it. I finished it last night - good book.

  19. BCB Says:

I finally bought The Citadel today. Hey, I’ve been busy. My boss decided he needed a reference book and asked me to look online to see whether B&N had it in stock. They did. Then he noticed that we could save money if only we had a member discount. So I told him I was a member.

    “You’re a member? Really?”

    “Really.”

“Would you mind going? I know it’s short notice. I need it by 1:00.”

“No problem. I don’t mind.” Geez. Send me to B&N instead of working any day. Please.

    “You’re sure?”

    “I’m sure.”

So I spent an extra five minutes shopping for myself. Got The Citadel and Anne Stuart’s new Ice book and the one by CJ Barry who wrote it as someone else. Sorry, I really don’t remember names. Haven’t read her stuff previously, but this sounds good and I’m looking forward to it. Not that I have time to read anymore, but I’ll get to it eventually.

Yes, I do have a point, thanks for asking. I thought Bob might be interested to know that the paperback of DLD was prominently displayed right up front by the checkout. That red and yellow cover just jumps right out at you.

Hope the recent wind and waves down there didn’t interfere too much with the kayaking and communing with marine life, Bob. And with the dolphins. Of course.

  20. Jennifer Talty Says:

BCB - C.J. Barry now writes under Samantha Graves. She’s totally awesome, and totally cool. Just love her. What book did you buy? I have then all - autographed no less. My favorite is UNMASKED, but I probably shouldn’t be talking abouy this here….

but COLD AS ICE, by Anne Stuart is also totally awesome (did I mentioned that one is autographed too.)

Oh, and then there is THE WOODS by Harlan Coben (yes, autographed).

I went to the book store the other day for a flipping gift card and spent 210 dollars. Something is wrong with that. Then went to target this morning for “stuff” and spent 240 and in that I bought the first season of The Unit, the second season of House and the Fourth season of The Charmed ones….and forgot the “stuff”, which included batteries for the remote for the CD player that is now in my office.

And no one really cares…. what was the blog post about… oh Lost, don’t watch it.

How about a new post? Maybe?….

  21. BCB Says:

Hi Jen! Yes, Samantha Graves. I knew that, just couldn’t think of it. I got Sight Unseen. And the Anne Stuart book I got is Ice Blue. I’ve also got Cold As Ice but, ahem, haven’t read it yet. And I guess I should get Black Ice and read it first, since that’s the first in that series.

I’m not even going to tell you how much money I spent when I went to get DLD last week.

And you know my eyes glaze over when you start gushing about Harlan Coben. Geez, woman, get a grip. lalalalala. [removing fingers from ears] You done yet?

I love The Unit. Except for the women. Someone should do something about those women. God, they’re pathetic.

What else can we talk about over here? We have to do something to entertain ourselves.

Hey, Bob, you ever been to ThrillerFest? Is it any good? Can a writer really learn anything there or is it just a place to see and be seen? I can’t tell just by looking at the web page. Jen and I are talking about going this year. Maybe. Honestly can’t decide whether I’d be attending that one as a writer or a fan.

I figure we keep this up long enough, Bob will write a new post just so he doesn’t have to listen to it any more.

Or not. He’s a contrary SO– um, so-and-so.

And Blogger always knows who I am, too. I don’t even have to sign in. Imagine that.

  22. Anonymous Says:

JJ: i’m trying, i’m trying! his and Coben’s. i will, soon, (i hope), maybe monday if i do enough homework sunday…argh. and there’s this Pratchett on my bed calling my name and ARGH! i cannot wait for summer and can get back to reading like i used to.

    Samantha Graves. she sounds familiar.

Samantha Graves Will Write for Wine with Lani Diane Rich.

Ahh The Citadel. I was going to buy it at Chapters for Scope as a Mother’s Day gift. What??? We have our priorities straight up here in Canada. But she reads these comments too so I have to do something else as a surprise. Still buying The Citadel though.

  24. inkgrrl Says:

Ooh Thrillerfest, come play with us! And yes, I need to update his site, it’s my fault there’s nothing on the home page about the two new books - spank me.

  25. BCB Says:

Inkgrrl, are you saying you have the power to make changes over here? And all this time I thought the site was hewn out of granite or forged from steel or something equally implacable. I’m impressed.

Hmmm. And what would we have to do to you so we could retrieve the Brief Intelligence posts? I mean, as long as you’re going to be messing around with it. . .

  26. Scope Dope Cherrybomb Says:

Yes, I would love a copy of The Citadel as a Mother’s Day gift, no matter how late. LOL

Where did you find Psychic Warrior? I would love a copy of that too for DH as he loved all Bob’s Area 51 books.

You can do the epub yourself if you own the rights. There are a few writer kind of sites that do that, collectively. Doing that might get you another print contract, if the sales were good on the ebook.
